From: Dorothy Sargent, 4511 N. 57th Dr.; Phoenix 31, Arizona To: Esther Worstell, 7178 Del Rosa Ave., San Bernadino, California March 10, 1963 Dear Esther & Boys, My apology for not replying to your letter and acknowledging with our sincere thanks the gift check. We were overwhelmed with your generosity. We have been contemplating whether it was for a stroller or play pen. I have so little time to call my own for letter wrtiting etc. these days -- is is so much different than I planned. Keith is a “colicky” baby and so fussy and restless at times - and even cries out in his sleep. He seems like a different person when he isn’t bothered by gas pains or cramps or whatever bothers him. Then, he loves to have someone talk to him and grins and seems to enjoy himself so much. The first time they brought him in to me, his eyes were wide open and he seemed to be looking me over just as I was him. He doesn’t sleep as much as I thought a baby his age would. He looks around and is content for 15 - 20 minutes. But then can change suddenly. He is so unpredictable as when he’ll sleep an have a wakeful period. So I can’t plan my work or rest periods very well. I’m still trying to figure out how to get in the recommended 8 hours of sleep at night for nursing mothers when you have to nurse your “little one” every 3 hours & it takes from half an hour and usually longer to feed, burp, change his diapers, etc. It has been quite a change in our household. Willie really has been wonderful in trying to get meals, clean - after his fashion - the house, and do the laundry. Perhaps I didn’t mention that I had complications in trying to have a normal delivery and ended up having a Ceasarean birth. Consequently, the recuperation was much longer, and the expected 3 or 4 day hospital stay stretched into 8 days ! But we’re all coming along fine now - and the worst is over - We think. Even the colic seems somewhat better the past few days. It’s hard to visualize that your 3 boys are practically - or are - young men now. The high taxes here in Arizona will probably cause us to move on to another state next year. The sunshine this winter has been very nice though, but the temperature range from the 30’s or 40’s to the 70’s isn’t to my liking as it seems you are either cold in the morning or overheated in the afternoon. Perhaps you become accustomed to it after being here longer. It was nice to hear from you and thanks again for your generous gift for Keith. Best wishes to you all from the Sargent’s three. Dorothy
